The Entrepreneur’s Edge: Self-Care That Actually Sustains You

You’ve heard it all: “Take care of yourself.” “Prioritize wellness.” “Find balance.” But when your calendar’s a warzone and your brain’s fried, those slogans blur into noise. Entrepreneurs don’t burn out from laziness — they burn out because the engine never shuts off. Self-care isn’t bubble baths or hacks; it’s rhythm, recalibration, and systems that keep you functional without draining your edge. The best techniques aren’t loud. They’re quiet, stabilizing background loops. You don’t need better. You need to be sustainable. Clarity. Continuity. And enough energy left to keep going — on your terms, with your mission intact.

Breathe Like It’s a Power Tool

Breathwork isn’t a trend. It’s a hard-reset mechanism that modern entrepreneurs have ignored for too long. You’re not chasing Zen — you’re shifting gears. Short, structured breathing cycles can rapidly downshift a revved-up nervous system. Whether you’re walking into a high-stakes pitch or recovering from a mentally fried sprint, controlled breathing moves the needle. Most don’t realize that deep breathing to reduce stress can literally change your cognitive access in the moment — not hours later. It’s not woo-woo; it’s circuitry. Ten seconds in, ten out. Do that for two minutes before your next critical call and watch how much sharper you hit.

Your Senses Need a Reset Too

When your stress doesn’t respond to willpower or caffeine, that’s your body tapping out. Resetting your sensory field can bring you back online. Go outside and feel the temperature. Touch water. Close your eyes and just let sound land without interpretation. Entrepreneurs live inside reactive cycles, and those loops accumulate. What helps isn’t always more input — it’s different input. Even two minutes of sensory reset restores calm more effectively than another scroll session. You don’t need a vacation. You need nervous system variety. Stretch your back. Smell eucalyptus. There’s no app for this — it’s primal, and it works.

Boundaries Are Not a Buzzword but a Lifeline

You don’t need another productivity system. You need an off switch. Building a company is seductive — it blurs everything. But the absence of boundaries doesn’t just burn time; it burns judgment. You start making decisions from depletion, not clarity. Entrepreneurs who survive long-term don’t just manage time — they manage energy. That means off-hours, inbox constraints, and protected space with no agenda. According to recent founder casework, setting boundaries protects well-being more than any other self-care tactic. If you want to make sharper bets and avoid dumb pivots, start by building a firewall around your own bandwidth.

Rituals That Don’t Burn Out

Rituals aren’t routines. They’re stabilizers — checkpoints in your day that aren’t negotiable. Morning coffee without your phone. An end-of-day audio journal. Midday silence before meetings. When done with intention, self-care rituals built into a schedule can act as tempo regulators, not time sucks. You don’t need three hours of yoga. You need 90 seconds where your brain isn’t negotiating with the next demand. The ritual doesn’t have to be good. It has to be yours. Entrepreneurs who survive long-term don’t just scale businesses. They scale the patterns that keep them sane.

If you want to last, you have to stop treating self-care like an afterthought. The techniques that keep entrepreneurs alive — really alive — are the ones that sync with their chaos, not compete with it. Breathwork, resets, boundaries, and rituals aren’t extras. They’re infrastructure. You won’t always get it right. But the entrepreneurs who burn out aren’t the ones who tried self-care ideas. They’re the ones who waited too long. Build systems that restore you mid-stride. Let recovery be part of the strategy, not the retreat. Because you’re not just building a business — you’re the one carrying it.

Review

Novel News Network – C’mon Let’s Play - @DSuberla@RABTBookTours by gstamperxxxx

Sometimes it takes reading about someone else’s journey and the things they learned along the way to open your eyes. Self-reflection is great and I think that in Dee G. Suberla reflecting, she opens that in the reader.

The theme is simple, moving on and moving forward. Not only that but doing it in a different kind of way. How our choices affect everything around us, how to make the right ones, and so much more.

I loved the comedic relief, this book and Suberla’s writing did not take itself too seriously.

How Startups Win Busy Customers

In today’s blink-and-scroll economy, grabbing a moment of a consumer’s attention can feel like chasing sunlight through a window blind. If you’re a startup, that moment is your shot to prove you're worth remembering — and it’s fleeting. Winning that attention and converting it into loyalty isn’t about making noise; it’s about showing up with precision, relevance, and timing. Let’s dig into real-world strategies that turn strangers into believers and believers into your biggest fans.

Cutting Through Noise

Your audience is saturated. Ads blink from every angle, influencers push ten brands before breakfast, and inboxes are digital landfills. To compete, your marketing must not just exist — it must interrupt without irritating. You need digital marketing strategies that convert customers, especially if you’re a startup trying to gain ground quickly. Smart founders anchor themselves in highly targeted messaging and surgical timing, often choosing hyperlocal campaigns, referral loops, or event-based pings to break through the clutter. Pair that with authentic, helpful content, and you're no longer noise — you're the one voice that matters.

Personalized Hooks

Generalized pitches are fast food for attention — convenient, forgettable, and empty. Personalized marketing is the seven-course meal. By leveraging user data, behavior cues, and psychographic profiling, startups can tailor their marketing to users in ways that feel less like selling and more like helping. Consider dynamically generated product recommendations, localized landing pages, or behavior-triggered emails that speak to a user’s specific context. The goal? Make them feel like your brand was built just for them. Personalization isn’t just a feature — it’s a trust builder.

Aggressive Launch Tactics

Early-stage traction often comes down to how loud, different, or compelling your first moves are. That doesn’t mean overhyping or overpromising — it means bold launch moves that slice through apathy. Think unexpected giveaways, timed exclusivity, or a challenge that goes viral for the right reason. But keep in mind: aggression needs grounding. Pair every punchy tactic with a safety net of operational readiness — nothing kills loyalty like a broken promise wrapped in good intentions. You get one chance to be “new” — make it count.

UX‑Driven Experience

Attention is fragile. One clunky form, one confusing button, one second too long — and your user’s gone. Designing for ease isn’t a luxury; it’s survival. You make it a UX-Driven design by intentionally crafting each touchpoint for the busy customer, to reduce friction and increase satisfaction. Whether it’s through mobile-first design, intuitive flows, or fast-loading pages, you’re shaping an emotional memory. The best brands don’t just look good — they feel good.

Earning an MBA

The more complex your ambitions, the more clarity you need to pull them off. That’s why structured learning can make all the difference. For startup founders juggling team building, product development, and market penetration, formal education like an MBA sharpens decision-making, clarifies financial strategies, and elevates operational thinking. It’s not about theory — it’s about practical frameworks you can bend into action. For many, finding success with an MBA means fewer rookie mistakes, better leadership habits, and faster traction in crowded markets.

Loyalty Blueprint

Loyalty doesn’t arrive in the mail. It’s engineered. Startups must think beyond points and perks — they need emotionally resonant systems that reward not just purchases, but participation. Consider a loyalty program and rewards tiers that evolve with the customer. Maybe your most vocal advocate gets a sneak peek of the next feature. Or maybe loyal users shape the roadmap. Build in moments that surprise, delight, and recognize — and you’ll earn more than repeat business; you’ll earn allegiance.

Retention Culture

It’s not enough for your brand to care about the customer. Your people need to breathe it. Building a culture obsessed with customers starts at the top — with founders who model curiosity, gratitude, and adaptability. Train your team to see feedback as fuel. Celebrate moments when someone goes above and beyond, and document them into playbooks. Customers don’t stay for the product; they stay because they feel seen. Loyalty is not a metric — it’s a mirror of your internal values made visible.

Busy consumers don’t give second chances. They reward clarity, relevance, and relationship. Startups who survive the noise do so by earning trust one touchpoint at a time — not by shouting, but by showing up where it matters. And the ones who win? They’re not louder. They’re sharper, kinder, and more attuned. Attention isn’t the goal — it’s the doorway. Loyalty is what waits on the other side.

Leadership is often associated with extroverted qualities—charisma, assertiveness, and quick decision-making in social settings. However, some of the most effective leaders in history have been introverts, proving that quiet strength can be just as powerful. In today’s work environment, where thoughtful decision-making, active listening, and deep focus are highly valued, introverts have unique advantages. By embracing their natural strengths and adapting their leadership style, introverts can not only thrive but also inspire those around them.

Leading Through Active Listening
One of the most underrated yet powerful leadership skills is the ability to truly listen. Introverts excel at active listening, taking the time to process information and consider different perspectives before responding. This makes them particularly effective in resolving conflicts, making informed decisions, and ensuring that all voices on their team are heard. Employees are more likely to feel valued and respected when they work for a leader who listens attentively rather than just waiting for their turn to speak.

Harnessing Deep Thinking for Strong Decision-Making
Introverts naturally engage in deep thinking, a quality that allows them to approach problem-solving with careful analysis and foresight. While extroverts may lean toward quick decision-making, introverted leaders take time to assess all possible outcomes. This ability to think critically and strategically helps them anticipate challenges, make well-informed choices, and develop long-term plans that benefit their team and organization. By trusting this strength, introverts can lead with confidence and clarity.

Navigating Decision-Making with Limited Information

Introverts often excel at assessing situations and preparing thoroughly before taking action, a strength that enhances strategic thinking and long-term planning. However, this same trait can lead to decision paralysis when action is required quickly or when information is incomplete. In fast-moving business environments, the pressure to make quick calls without a full picture can trigger anxiety and self-doubt. For introverted leaders, learning to trust their instincts and make confident decisions despite uncertainty is a crucial growth area.

One way to strengthen this skill is through business decision-making training designed to help professionals evaluate risk, prioritize options, and act decisively under pressure. A valuable resource for this is LinkedIn Learning’s “Decision-Making Strategies” course, which offers practical tools to sharpen your judgment and reduce hesitation when stakes are high. By building these skills, introverts can maintain their thoughtful approach while increasing agility and resilience in leadership roles.

Embracing a Calm and Steady Presence
A leader’s temperament sets the tone for their team, and introverts bring a sense of calm and stability to the workplace. They are less likely to be reactive in stressful situations, helping to create an environment where employees feel secure and supported. Their ability to remain composed under pressure allows them to navigate challenges with poise, reassuring their team even in uncertain times. This steady leadership style fosters trust and confidence among employees, leading to stronger collaboration and productivity.

Improving Communication with Executive Presence Training
Strong communication skills are essential for building relationships, leading teams, and making a lasting impact in any professional setting. Developing clarity, confidence, and the ability to engage others effectively can set you apart as a leader. The importance of executive presence training lies in its ability to elevate not just communication skills but also leadership, authority, and influence. Whether attended in person, virtually, or through self-administered learning, this type of training provides valuable techniques to refine your speaking style, body language, and overall professional presence.

Building Meaningful One-on-One Relationships
While introverts may not seek out large networking events, they excel at developing deep, meaningful relationships with individuals. This strength allows them to connect with team members on a personal level, understanding their motivations, strengths, and concerns. By fostering strong one-on-one connections, introverted leaders can build loyalty, improve team morale, and create a culture of trust. These relationships not only enhance teamwork but also empower employees to perform at their best.

Leading by Example with Thoughtful Actions
Rather than relying on commanding speeches or high-energy presentations, introverts lead by example through their actions. Their natural tendency to observe, reflect, and act with intention allows them to model the behavior they expect from their team. By demonstrating integrity, dedication, and professionalism in their work, they earn the respect of their colleagues. This authentic leadership approach inspires employees to follow their lead, creating a workplace culture based on accountability and excellence.

Leveraging the Power of Preparation
Introverts often shine when they have time to prepare, and they can use this to their advantage in leadership roles. Whether it’s delivering a presentation, leading a meeting, or making a difficult decision, preparation gives them the confidence to articulate their thoughts clearly. This attention to detail and thoughtful approach helps them gain credibility and ensures their ideas are communicated effectively. By embracing preparation as a strength, introverted leaders can turn what some perceive as a weakness into a key advantage.

Introverts don’t have to change who they are to be great leaders—they just need to harness their natural strengths. By leading with active listening, deep thinking, and meaningful connections, they can build strong teams and make thoughtful, lasting impacts. Their calm presence, strategic communication, and ability to lead by example create a leadership style that is both effective and inspiring. In today’s evolving work environment, introverts have a unique opportunity to redefine leadership on their own terms.

Employee training is often seen as a necessary expense, but when done right, it becomes a powerful investment. The challenge is determining when it’s truly worth the time and resources and ensuring that the training aligns with your business goals. Not all training is created equal, and different teams have different needs. Investing wisely requires a strategic approach that balances company objectives with employee growth. The right training programs can boost productivity, improve retention, and enhance workplace culture. However, the wrong approach can waste money and leave employees disengaged. Here’s how to determine when training is the right choice and how to pick the most effective programs for your team.

New Technologies Mean Disruptions

Technology is evolving faster than ever, and businesses that fail to keep up often fall behind. When new tools, software, or systems are introduced, employees need proper training to adapt. Without it, productivity drops, mistakes increase, and frustration builds among staff. Investing in upskilling ensures that employees can leverage new technologies effectively rather than struggle with outdated methods. If your industry is seeing rapid technological shifts, training should be an ongoing priority rather than a one-time initiative.

Performance Gaps

If you notice that certain employees or departments are consistently underperforming, training might be the missing piece. Whether it's a lack of technical skills, weak leadership abilities, or poor customer service, structured learning can address these gaps. Performance reviews and key performance indicators (KPIs) can help pinpoint areas in need of improvement. Training programs designed to target specific weaknesses can lead to measurable improvements in efficiency and output. Before making a hiring decision to replace struggling employees, investing in training may offer a more cost-effective and morale-boosting alternative.

Employee Retention

High turnover rates are a sign that something isn’t working in your workplace culture. Employees want opportunities to grow, and if they don’t see a path forward, they’ll seek it elsewhere. Providing training and development opportunities signals to employees that you’re invested in their careers. This can increase loyalty, job satisfaction, and overall engagement. When training is tied to career advancement, employees are more likely to stay and contribute at a higher level. Investing in education and mentorship programs can make the difference between losing top talent and building a committed workforce.

Compliance and Safety

Some industries have strict regulatory requirements, and failing to meet them can result in heavy fines or legal issues. Regular training ensures that employees stay up to date with the latest compliance rules, safety procedures, and industry standards. This is especially crucial in fields such as healthcare, finance, and manufacturing, where mistakes can have serious consequences. A well-trained staff reduces risks, improves workplace safety, and minimizes liability. Even in less regulated industries, compliance training can help foster ethical decision-making and responsible business practices.

Strengthen Leadership and Management

Strong leadership is critical to long-term business success, but great leaders aren’t born—they’re developed. If your company struggles with team motivation, decision-making bottlenecks, or ineffective communication, leadership training can help. Providing management training to new and existing leaders ensures they have the skills to guide their teams effectively. Investing in leadership development also creates a pipeline for future managers, reducing the need for external hires. Employees who see a clear path to leadership are more likely to stay engaged and contribute at a higher level.

Innovation and Creativity Are Key to Growth

Some companies prioritize efficiency, while others thrive on creativity and innovation. If your business relies on staying ahead of industry trends, training can fuel new ideas and fresh perspectives. Encouraging employees to learn about emerging trends, problem-solving techniques, and creative thinking can lead to breakthrough innovations. Cross-training employees in different areas of the business can also spark new ideas by exposing them to different viewpoints. A culture of continuous learning ensures that employees don’t just maintain the status quo but actively push boundaries.
Choose the Right Training Approach

Not all training programs will deliver the results you’re looking for, so selecting the right approach is crucial. First, identify your goals—whether it’s improving technical skills, boosting leadership, or increasing overall efficiency. Next, consider how your employees learn best. Some may thrive in hands-on workshops, while others prefer online courses or mentorship programs. For example, if you have people who need more to build technical skills in IT, this is a good choice. Tailoring training to fit different learning styles improves engagement and retention. Finally, measure success through follow-up assessments, feedback, and performance improvements. A training program should be an ongoing process that adapts to evolving business needs.

Investing in staff training isn’t just about ticking a box, it’s about creating a more capable, motivated, and engaged workforce. The key is recognizing when training is needed and aligning it with business goals. Whether it’s adapting to new technologies, closing performance gaps, or fostering leadership, the right training programs make all the difference. By choosing a strategic approach, you ensure that training delivers real value rather than becoming a wasted expense.

Navigating the complexities of leadership demands more than innovative ideas or a dynamic presence. You must cultivate sharp awareness, flexibility, and unwavering dedication. As you assume the role of a business leader, it's essential to recognize and sidestep typical leadership pitfalls. These obstacles can drastically hinder your capacity to lead effectively and jeopardize the long-term achievements you aim for. Suberla Consulting discusses how to sidestep common derailers and guide your team and business toward sustained success.

Coachability: The Foundation of Adaptive Leadership

One significant derailer for business leaders is a lack of coachability. If you find yourself resisting feedback, not fully internalizing advice, or failing to act upon it, you are likely stunting your growth and the evolution of your business. Being coachable is not about surrendering your vision but about refining it. It involves listening actively to mentors and peers, integrating their insights into your strategy, and responding adaptively to challenges. Embrace feedback as a tool for learning, not criticism, and you will find that it propels your business forward rather than holding it back.

The Imperative of Thorough Research

Launching a business without sufficient research can lead to preventable missteps. Earning an online degree in business is a strategic move to develop your core competencies in vital areas such as accounting, financial management, communication, and marketing. With the flexibility of online learning, you can conveniently gain a bachelor’s degree at your pace from an accredited institution. This educational path will broaden your understanding and equip you with the tools to make informed decisions and strategically navigate the market.

Commitment: The Drive to Excel

A half-hearted approach to leadership can be just as detrimental as no leadership at all. Limited commitment manifests as a lack of motivation to excel and a reluctance to fully integrate into your organizational culture. As a leader, your drive sets the tone for the entire company. Cultivate a deep-seated passion for your work and show up every day willing to push the boundaries. Remember, your commitment to the business is often a reflection of its potential to thrive.

Emotional Intelligence: Key to Relational Leadership

Emotional intelligence is crucial for effective leadership yet frequently underestimated. You need to be intensely aware of your emotions and be perceptive of others' feelings to lead successfully. Without emotional intelligence, you may find it challenging to build empathetic relationships, often resulting in misunderstandings and team discord. Elevate your leadership and improve your self-awareness, empathy, and ability to manage emotions. These skills are vital for creating a nurturing and cooperative workplace, which is fundamental to any prospering enterprise.

Temperament and Cultural Fit

Your temperament significantly influences how well you integrate with your company's culture and values. Suppose your behavior or attitude conflicts with your organization's core values; gaining your team's respect and cooperation becomes a formidable challenge. Aligning your values with those of your organization is crucial, and consistently demonstrating behaviors that support this alignment is essential. Such cooperative behavior improves team dynamics and strengthens your position as a respected and effective leader. Ensuring your actions consistently reflect the company’s values will solidify your leadership and foster a positive organizational culture.

Assuming a leadership role is a thrilling adventure filled with distinct challenges. You can significantly boost your effectiveness as a leader by mastering common derailers through coachability, diligent research, steadfast commitment, emotional intelligence, and appropriate temperament. Make it a habit to assess these critical areas consistently and strive for ongoing enhancement. Your role as a leader involves achieving your goals and evolving into the leader your team deserves. By tackling challenges head-on as opportunities for personal and professional growth, you will propel your business to new heights.

If your business needs additional workers, it’s likely a sign that your company is on the right track. But what do you do if you can’t afford to hire a team of full-time employees? Can you still grow your business and accomplish your goals?

Yes, you sure can. Today, it’s easier than ever to hire top talent from all over the world for one-time projects or recurring services. Below, we cover the ins and outs of building a productive and happy team of freelancers.

Get your ducks in a row.

Your first step will be to determine what you want from your freelance team. What precisely do you need from freelancers? What roles need to be filled, and which tasks are overwhelming you?

If you start hiring people left and right without having a clear idea of what will help your business move forward, you will end up wasting money and find it difficult to develop healthy relationships with your team members. Furthermore, you will need to ensure that you have the processes and systems in place to deliver assignments and pay your freelancers.

Get out there and find some freelancers.

It is relatively easy to find freelancers. Online job boards abound; the key is to find one or more that meet your specific needs. Many business owners begin on general freelance sites like Upwork, Freelancer.com, Fiverr, etc. However, you might benefit from creating profiles on job boards that cater to specialties, such as SalesJobs, AngelList, Stack Overflow, WorkingNotWorking, and ProBlogger.

Using social media is also an excellent way to connect with freelancers. You will want to work hard at building your online presence and garnering a following on social media. A big part of engaging consumers on social media sites is posting quality content regularly. For example, if you’re posting on Instagram, you could use a resize image for Instagram tool to quickly modify the image to the appropriate size when posting images. You can then upload the images to your social media pages instantly.

Be thorough when hiring.

The easiest way to collect a list of potential candidates is to post a job on your platforms and provide a brief overview of the skills and knowledge the position requires. Be sure to leave your post live for a few days so that multiple people can apply for the job. This way, you will have options to sit through to identify the best candidate.

Consider asking questions in your post; ask one or two related to the specific job and one random question. Attention to detail is a critical skill for any position, so you can weed out the applicants who do not answer your questions.

After you have narrowed down your list of candidates to three or four, ask those people follow-up questions. This is an excellent time to request work samples and get to know the candidates more thoroughly. Many business owners and entrepreneurs send sample assignments or request that the freelancers do a trial run to see how their abilities and processes fit in with the company.

Manage your team well.

Managing freelancers is another ball game. If you do not have a dedicated product manager on staff, you will need to ensure you have the proper project management software. In fact, this software is useful even if you have a project manager. You may need some freelancers for one-time projects and others for recurring services.

For one-time freelancers, messaging through your project management software should suffice. For the team members who will be providing services for the foreseeable future, you may need to use a different communication platform such as email or a team chat app. Lastly, you will need to ensure that you provide any details each of your freelancers needs to satisfy project requirements and that you securely pay them on time.

Many entrepreneurs and business owners are building freelance teams because of the flexibility, savings, and work quality it can provide. Keep the information and advice above in mind as you come up with a strategy for hiring skilled and dedicated workers to jump on your projects. You will learn a lot as you go in terms of keeping your team happy and productive.

I went through a number of college classes and quite a few management training sessions on communications. I have known for decades, the importance of cultivating impeccable listening skills. I can actually teach a seminar on it, or perhaps, I could just write a blog. My guess is that you also know the importance of it… and yet…

In the early years as a manager, I worked very hard on listening to my staff and colleagues. I did have to work at transitioning from that “listening to respond” place I was in to the “listening to understand” place where I wanted to be. At first, I worked on hiding my need to insert my opinion at every opportunity. It turns out that people could tell when I was chomping at the bit to get my turn to speak. I can spot it now in others and I am quietly amused – I get it!

After working way too hard to conceal the body language that comes with a need to speak, I found that it was much easier to just decide, at the onset of the conversation, to shut the heck up and listen to this person. I trusted that he or she would let me if they wanted me to respond. Wow – now that one made a real difference. It was quite the surprise to discover that if I say very little and don’t add my point of view the world kept turning! Wow!

I learned so much about others not to mention when I finally opened my mouth, my comments actually related to the conversation because I was fully engaged. And, even better, I could thoughtfully confirm first what I thought they meant which automatically resulted in asking intelligent questions.

I did well with one on one or small group conversations, but in meetings I would occasionally find myself slipping. Plus, if it was a teleconference I would occasionally over-talk because I couldn’t see others dozing off or leaning forward trying to get a word in edgewise.

As I observed and assessed this behavior, I had to ask why… why was it so important for me to be heard? Because, in many cases, if I found a break and shared my thoughts but had forgotten that I was on mute, everything went along just fine. My behavior, when getting ready to share my thoughts reminded me of a fear-based behavior, feeling tense, feeling left out, afraid of not being heard. I found a way to ensure I would only comment to add value… as a result I developed, and employed The Shut-up Strategy.

It made a real difference but I continued to struggle in teleconferences. So, I developed a portable tool to support my new strategy. I wrote SHUT-UP! on sticky notes and placed them where I usually looked while on the phone. Sometimes it was the office wall, or on the desk, maybe on my computer. (Note, remove them after the teleconference… it’s hard to explain to visitors.)

It resulted in a chance to honestly help to resolve issues or contribute real value, or to just be present and learn. Because those rude little Shut-up sticky notes, I was able to align to my passion to help, with the actions I took. I developed the SHUT-UP strategy to train myself while no one was looking. (Unless I forgot to take stickies down after the meeting.)

I truly enjoy luxuriously listening! It’s a critical leadership skill that dramatically improves the efficiency of meetings, particularly when teams acknowledge it as a behavioral expectation. Ahhhh, now we need the Shut-Up! Strategy for teams…

A key leadership skill is constructive self reflection. It’s a great way to see into your own blind spots. Taking time for honest self-reflection is one way strong leaders achieve access to their blind spots. If you are aspiring to become a stronger leader, here is a quick exercise to begin your own self-reflection practice. Get a pen and paper or open a Word document; there’s an assignment involved.

It’s always easier to start with other people. Spend a few seconds thinking of someone you admire. This can be anyone from anytime and anywhere. List three traits they possess that you admire most. Use only a few words, no sentences… think bullet points. Do it now. Really, just write or type it … yes, it’s required.

Ok now think of someone who really presses your buttons. The one person who really irritates you and sets you off. List three traits they possess that annoy the heck out of you. Just three bullet points. Do it now.

So, if you are reading this line without having done the above exercises I’m going to have to add you to my annoying list… There is still a chance to stay off that list … do them both now.

For me, a person that skims info without doing the necessary work… is ANNOYING!! [And yes… I have, on occasion, skimmed through a few exercises… Guilty!]

Ok, here’s the thing about all of us. We resonate with the familiar, it’s physiology. You may have heard of the Secret, like attracts like or maybe Einstein’s quote about aligning energies with that which you want to make yours or the ever reliable, time tested… Takes one to know one.

Those things that you are strongly drawn to, or repelled from, are within you. On the positive side after a little self-reflection you will at least see that these admirable traits are the ones you aspire to master. It’s quite likely that you already demonstrate them and may have failed to notice. We often take our own strengths in stride thinking; If I can do it so can everyone else. Some people completely disregard some of their most impressive strengths like this.

On the less flattering side you may not realize that you too my friend, are guilty of that which you accuse. Something in you recognizes something familiar in those you admire as well as those who annoy you. You may not realize that you have something similar going on, something on some level that you’re not all that impressed with.

Does someone drive you crazy because they talk too much in meetings? Try being more concise. Is there a know-it-all on your list? Try soliciting for more input and lecture a bit less. Personally, I have to start doing the suggested exercises in the self-help books before reading on and ruining the fun! This annoying little habit, by the way, it is a new discovery for me as a result of writing this darn blog.

It’s not an automatic thing, it’s not an easy thing to do, but it’s worth your time. There are quite a few coaches out there who now hire coaches because they can see that there are blind spots but can’t quite get a grip. It works, and it’s a good short cut but I say – try this first.

Work with and embrace both sides of your traits and you will develop the habit of leveraging the strengths and curbing the development areas as needed; most of the time. Next time someone presses your buttons, experiment by being grateful for a discovery about yourself. Then just overlook their behavior, internally acknowledge it, then just let it go and get to the point. Stay focused, detach from emotional impacts then move forward and get things done. No, it doesn’t work for every single situation, but it works for a lot of them.

Begin a practice of self-reflection by recalling situations when you experienced an emotional response. Become more effective by releasing attachment to the behavioral traits and attitudes of others on the team. Make it a practice to recognize that you just might be receiving a signal to better manage yourself … it could happen.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
