There Has To Be Something More…

Dee G. Suberla grew up in the 60s and 70s and learned most of her lessons, the hard way. As a self-proclaimed hippie, her experiences were entertaining to say the least. Later in life, as she joined the corporate world, she found that her mom had always been right, “You can do anything you set your mind to.” She set her sights, moved up the ranks, and found herself coaching people along the way.

When the time was right, she took her own advice, but learned that it isn’t such a direct route. Today Dee is a coach, consultant, and teacher who, by sharing her story, helps the reader see that no matter where you start, you can achieve your hopes and dreams; her life is proof of that!

Shortly thereafter, my husband and I were watching the latest version of Alice in Wonderland, “Jaded,” where Alice goes back to Wonderland as an adult. Somewhere in there the Mad Hatter said, “Alice, you’ve lost your muchness!” I knew right then and there that’s what was wrong with me. I had lost my muchness! Something much more tangible than my hippie! And I wept.

Who needs a PMP certification??

Companies have grown to need Project Managers but they don’t necessarily want to pay for them. That’s how many of us find ourselves doing the work of a PM while keeping our day job as well. It’s true the methodology that is taught in various PMP certification courses is useful but in practical terms projects whether small or large don’t behave as the models used to teach the methods.
I found myself wallowing in Zoom and Team meetings in my dinning room at the beginning of the COVID 19 Pandemic after having accepted a position as a “Project Manager” just two months prior to the lockdowns. Unable to pop by coworkers cubes and VPs corner offices to ad hoc strategize the subtle nuances of a given project, I happened upon Dee Suberla’s book just in the nick of time. I found myself wanting to throw the PMBOK out the window after seeing Dee’s ability to distill methods and concepts from dozens of pages of dry writing of the PMBOK into a fun and insightful anecdotes and story reminiscent of Patrick Lencioni’s books.
Once the Pandemic started to subside and I was able to work with people face to face again, I found my self sharing this book with dozens of people who were doing their day jobs as part of larger Programs I was managing. I wanted them to read this so that they could see the big picture POOF!! they had indeed become Project Managers and didn’t even know it.
Highly recommend this to anyone looking to quickly make sense of having just been asked by their boss to run a project and have a Gantt chart and Work Breakdown Structure on their desk by Friday!
